Incredibly so. Chemical peels have a clever little way of starting a chain reaction, making your skin and skin care products work at their best. The acids lift any dead cells away, encouraging the living cells below to multiply and move up. This increases collagen production and creates more hyaluronic acid, giving your skin a lovely youthful and radiant appearance. Your skin care products will then be more effective as there are no dead cells getting in the way.
How does a chemical peel work?
A chemical peel essentially uses a clinically safe acidic solution to accelerate skin cell turnover and to ultimately help reveal new and fresh skin much sooner. By initially stripping the outermost layer of dead skin cells, the solution helps to reveal younger looking skin and boost collagen production in the process.
What skin concerns can chemical peels help?
Chemical peels are known to be extremely effective, especially when carried out regularly. Whether you're suffering from acne, pigmentation issues or generally dull-looking skin they can really fast-track your skin's recovery. Chemical peels are particularly effective at tackling acne scaring, sun damage and wrinkles. Perhaps you're simply in need of some skin rejuvenation? Achieve a fresh and radiant glow after treatment.
Does a chemical peel hurt?
Any sensations experienced during a chemical peel are often very mild and represent a slight tingling sensation. After treatment, it usually takes 4-5 minutes before such sensations go with any redness usually subsiding within a few hours. Following treatment, your skin may also feel tight, which also loosens quickly.
How long is the recovery time?
It's difficult to put an exact timeframe on your skin's recovery following a peel. As all skin types and tones are different, there's no pin-point answer, however, the general rule is that peeling usually lasts between three and five days. With an extensive range of peels available with different strengths, there's no 'one size fits all'. During your consultation and after care service, one of our friendly practitioners will be able to give you a good idea of likely recovery time.
Our Skin Expert Says
Whilst recovery times can vary, they can often be sped up with good quality care and prevention. It's important to avoid heavy sweating for the 24 hours post treatment and be careful when it comes to sun exposure. You can remedy any tightness with a good quality moisturiser, whilst adopting a gentle cleanser and sunscreen into your routine is a must. Please do not use any topical treatments that are prescribed as these are often potent and can cause damage, whilst it's also an absolute no to picking or peeling off any skin that is flaking. Doing so, could result in scaring and serious damage.
Will my skin always peel?
It's not guaranteed that your skin will always peel following treatment. However, it's important to know that if your skin doesn't peel, it doesn't mean your treatment hasn't been effective. It's common for your skin not to peel, however, it will still be promoting skin regeneration whilst slaying dead skin cells. Some skin types react differently to different strength peels and as part of your journey with Opal Medispa, we'll still be managing your treatments to deliver optimal skin health and sustainable results.
How many peels do I need to see results?
To see clear and consistent results, we recommend a course of six chemical peels over a five to six month period. It's important to build up the strength of your peel over time, which will be at the discretion of one of our fully trained practitioners.
